TIPS FOR AVOIDING BEING THE VICTIM OF A STREET CRIME

Understand what criminals look for in their potential victims:

1) Lack of awareness.
Be Aware – Know where you are, where you’re going and what is going on around you. This includes people, events and potential exit routes.

2) Bad neighborhood at a bad time.
Get Information – If you don’t know about the safety of a neighborhood, ASK someone you trust before you go there. Reconsider walking or driving alone while in a potentially bad neighborhood especially at night.

3) Non-Aggressive body language.
Act Confident – Stand or walk confidently by keeping your head up standing straight and a purposeful stride. Always scan your immediate surroundings. In addition, take command of your space, by keeping your distance when walking past strangers on the street or in dark areas.

4) Spending time idling in one location.
Be a Moving Target – Don’t give them time to plan an attack. When going somewhere, keep moving. If you are in your car, think twice before sitting there with the car doors unlocked while you do stuff like checking a map, list or magazine or fixing your makeup. Too many women have been attacked in this situation. If you are in a parking lot that is potentially unsafe, get in your car, lock the doors and leave.

5) Easy access to valuables.
Hide Valuables – When walking in a bad neighborhood or at night, don’t wear valuable jewelry. Also, keep your purse inside your coat or tucked close to your body. Do not carry a loose bag or backpack, unless you have eyes in the back of your head to keep watch on it.

6) Loose clothing or hair.
Prevent Handholds – Think about places where an attacker can grab and pull at you. Put your long hair up in a hat or tuck it inside your clothing. Remove loose scarves, belts and backpacks or place them inside your coat.

7) No threat of physical deterrent.
Be Intimidating – If a criminal doesn’t view you as difficult or a physical threat, you could be a potential victim. This can be quickly changed if you decide to carry something large and blunt such as a large golf umbrella, baseball bat or walking stick.

Life On The Mat

Everyday we face our fear, our insecurities and our doubts.

Everyday we come face to face with our raw emotions. It’s just us and our opponent. No mother, no father, no religion. There is no savior on the mat but our own hard work, our own skill and our own determination.

It doesn’t matter how much money you have in the bank or what certificates or diplomas you have on the wall. It doesn’t matter who you know, how old you are, or what you look like or what color your skin is. All of those things have zero value on the mat. It does matter how much heart you have. It matters how much skill you have and how much time you have put in. It does matter how brave you are and how much you believe in yourself.

We are faced with a raw, uncensored truth of who we are every minute on the mat. Our opponent can try to hide it with a smile or puff out his chest or fake an injury or tell us he didn’t sleep the night before but we can see it in his eyes. He also cant hide the truth. On the mat, no one cares about your excuses. Whether you are injured, going through a divorce or a break up, or that you didn’t sleep the night before or you had no breakfast, or you lost your job. The only thing that matters is your skill, you heart and your determination. There are no excuses on the mat.

On the mat the boy will turn into a man, the man will turn into a warrior, and the warrior will turn into a legend.

Our instrument, our weapon is our body and our minds. On the mat a stranger quickly becomes a friend and the friend becomes a comrade and the comrade becomes our brother. Our teacher becomes our guide and our guide becomes our best friend. On the mat our friends become our teammates and our teammates become our tribe.

Pain and humiliation are things we quickly learn to get used to and the sweet taste of victory, as sweet as it is, only lasts but a brief moment. When we eat we are thinking about how the food affects our training. When we sleep our minds are occupied going over the day’s matches, thinking about tomorrow opponents and trying to work out the newest move or technique to add to our arsenal.

Some say we are extreme and obsessed but we know the truth, and the truth is, they are mediocre and lack passion. Some of us are gifted with physical strength that surpasses others, some of us with speed, some of us with intelligence. And some of us make up for all that with sheer determination and an iron will but no matter what quality or qualities we possess without loyalty, all of these qualities are not only worthless but dangerous. As surely one day they will serve our enemies.

Where people run away, we move forward. Where others shrink into themselves, we expand into the environment. Where others flinch and are scared to look, we open our eyes wide and confront the situation with our whole being.

On the mat we learn the definition of true respect. On the mat we learn tolerance and self-control. On the mat we learn how to win and more importantly how to lose and yet not be defeated in spirit. We learn that’s there’s no way around hard work if we want success. That we get what we deserve and that nobody in the world but us is responsible for our life.

The relationship between teacher and student is a sacred one, which requires both to give of themselves completely. This is a true definition of trust. On the mat we learn that with correct timing, leverage and technique we can overcome any obstacle. These are things that can be talked about but cannot be taught in schools. These are qualities that a man must possess and without them, no matter how much money or fame he has or how many diplomas he owns or how many books he’s read he’s still only a fraction of a man.

All of these things and more we have learned on the mat but the most important lesson and the most valuable and the one lesson that will insure that we continue to learn on the mat, is that no matter how great or skilled we become, we are to always stay humble in the presence of our teachers who are responsible for us learning these lessons on the mat…

success.

Synonyms:persistence – tenacity – pertinacity – assiduity

Let me tell you about this Picture-

Jasmine is a cute, snippet of a girl, maybe 45 pounds.  She’s a typical kid, does all the things that little girls like to do.  However, she has something special, a willingness to keep trying, to never give up, to persevere.

Jasmine Harris, she started training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu three years ago.  Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a performance based martial art that changed the martial arts world.  It’s a style that can allow a smaller, weaker person to succeed through leverage and technique, but it’s not an easy road.  Her dad Airon brought her in, wanting her to learn self defense and build confidence.  Through that time, she trained regularly, got stronger, fitter, and more confident.  She entered tournaments, lost, sometimes cried, but always came back for more.  She continued to train, practice her technique and develop her skills.  She always has a smile,  and keeps going even when the training is hard.  Not even a broken wrist suffered at the playground stopped her from moving forward.  Her unwillingness to give up makes her a winner at everything she does and recently placed at the Charles Gracie Invitational last September.

Life is hard, it’s easy to get tripped up, to falter, and doubt yourself.  There’s always someone or
something to distract you from your goal.  Quitting is an easy solution to discomfort.  When we see
people strive and reach and get back up and go again, we are inspired.  Jasmine is a person that you can watch and be inspired by.  She faces every goal with steely determination, with one simple plan – Don’t Give Up!

The lesson here is, that learning to fail, and get back up- That’s the key to success.  Jasmine has learned that lesson already, and is already a success.  She demonstrates that one thing that we all need to have more of-

Starting February 18th Tournament Practice will begin.

Kids 4:00-5:15

  • During the regularly scheduled Friday class time, we will be going over Competition Training in preparation for the upcoming Tournament on April 2nd, hosted by US at the Community Recreation Center.


Adults 6:30-7:30

  • Competition Training will include, strategies, practice as a competitor, a referee, and a coach.  Start forming our team now for the West Coast Team Challenge – Lake Tahoe Open on April 2nd.

Come properly fueled and ready to give no less than 110%.

SCHOOL HYGEINE!!!!!!

Hygiene is a big  requirement for most schools, here is a paragraph of school hygiene protoc0l!

 WASH YOUR GI (UNIFORM) FREQUENTLY!
 
Dirty GIs (Uniforms) can carry a lot of bacteria. Some might wonder why it is even necessary to speak to this. Doesn’t everyone keep their GI fresh and clean for every workout? Knee pads and wraps? They don’t, and we found over time many people simply were not aware of this aspect of working in Academies. Some come from other sports where you don’t have the consideration for ongoing hygiene protocol; at most you simply throw your socks and trunks in the wash.  Others are younger single people who don’t have anyone else to remind them. GIs and all accessories like pads should be washed after every workout. But they should also be aired and allowed to dry out after the workout if not immediately washed. One of the worst things you can do is get a GI soaked during a workout and then put it in an athletic bag overnight and not allows it to air out. Single guys are notorious for that. Some leave the wet GI in the bag and the bag is in the trunk of their car for two days. It makes cleaning them much more difficult after that; and is why some GIs get “old” way before they should. Having more than one or two GIs is best because you reduce wear and it is then easier to have each GI (Uniform) cleaned and maintained properly

The Charles Gracie Invitational competition is now scheduled for Saturday, October 30th,  

in the Main Gym of Kimball High School located at 3200 Jaguar Run, Tracy, California 95377. I  want every student to know that I strongly urge all the students in the Charles Gracie Network to participate in this event. Though the competition level is high; so is the sportsmanship and the fun.

 

I’m counting on you to be there!
